Church Camp Reflections (Part 1)

Written by Wong Yoke Mei

My Journey of Faith: Learning, Connecting and Growing

As a new babe in Christ, being baptised less than six months ago, I am still growing in my walk with God.

This year’s church camp gave me the space to slow down, connect with my brethren, and reflect on my journey so far.

1. Reconnecting with Myself and God

Becoming a Christian this year has changed the way I see myself and life. One moment that stayed with me was the self-reflection session. Having some quiet time away from my usual routine gave me the chance to look into my heart and ask myself: How close am I to God? Am I growing in my faith? Am I really making enough time for Him?

As I reflected, I realised how easily I can get caught up in my own plans, worries, and daily responsibilities. For example, there are days when I am busy with my own plans or spending time on my phone, and before I know it, the day is almost over. I may tell myself that I will pray or read the Bible later, but sometimes “later” never comes. This made me realise that I need to be more intentional about making time for God.

I want to start with something simple – spending time with God every day through prayer and reading the Bible. I want these moments to be more than just a routine. I want to talk to Him honestly, understand His Word, and know Him more deeply. I also want to learn to honour Him and remember that He is the Almighty God.

I know I am still at the beginning of this journey and have a lot to learn. I may not have everything figured out, but I hope to keep seeking God, trusting Him, and allowing Him to shape me each day.

Psalm 119:59–60: “I thought about my ways, and turned my feet to Your testimonies. I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments.”

2. Reconnecting with My Brethren

Another meaningful part of the church camp was getting to know my brethren on a more personal level.

During church activities and gatherings, we may see one another often, but we do not always have the chance to sit down and really talk. At the church camp, there was more time to slow down, share, laugh, and simply be together. I really appreciated those moments because they allowed me to see different sides of people I usually only see at church.

One particular conversation touched me. Someone took the time to ask about my journey before I became a Christian and listened to me with an open heart. Because there was no rush, I felt comfortable sharing something personal about my past and how I came to know God.

What touched me most was simply being listened to and understood without judgment. Through that conversation, I realised how much a person’s patience, understanding, love, and consistency in their faith can influence someone else’s life. It also made me look back and realise how much becoming a Christian has changed and shaped me.

It was just one conversation, but it stayed with me. It reminded me that sometimes, we do not need to do something big to make someone feel cared for. Sometimes, simply being there and genuinely listening is enough.

The church camp also reminded me that meaningful relationships take time. I want to get to know my brethren beyond our usual church interactions, and I hope to build a connection where we feel comfortable sharing, trusting, and supporting one another.

I am thankful for the people God has placed around me. Having brethren who can pray with me, encourage me, and walk alongside me makes me feel that I do not have to go through my Christian journey alone.

Hebrews 10:24–25: “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”
